In a devastating turn of events, Alfred Okyere, a promising Ghanaian student, had his life brutally cut short just one week into his part-time job in Canada. This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving family, friends, and classmates reeling in grief. As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death continues, Okyere’s tragic fate serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by international students pursuing their dreams abroad, and the need for support systems to ensure their safety and well-being.
A family friend has reported that homicide victim Alfred Okyere, a 23-year-old who arrived in Saskatoon from Ghana four months ago as an international student, had plans to build a better life for himself.
Alexander Osei-Owusu mentioned that Okyere lived with his sister and recently took a part-time job at DSI Underground Canada, a mining supply company located in the city’s northern industrial area.
“As many students these days, everybody is trying to find work here and there to get something, to support his education,” Osei-Owusu said.
Osei-Owusu said Okyere was stabbed by a co-worker on Monday night.
In a news release, police said they were called to the facility at 8 p.m. CST.
“Upon arrival, Police located a 23-year-old male victim suffering from stab wounds,” the release said.
“He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”
Alfred Okyere arrived in Saskatoon from Ghana in September 2024. Tragically, he was killed just a week after starting his part-time job.
Troy Francis Leclair, 53, appeared in provincial court on Wednesday morning, facing charges of first-degree murder.
Okyere was born in Kumasi, Ghana, and was an active member of the Church of Pentecost in Saskatoon, which serves as a significant community hub for Ghanaians.
Friends have established a GoFundMe campaign to support his family during this difficult time.
The police have not released Okyere’s name or the name of the business where the incident occurred, stating that it is part of an ongoing investigation.
